S.T.E.M. Day at Ft. Meade

Are you interested in learning more about S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fields?  Then look no further!  We have a great program in store developed by the Boy Scouts of America taking place at Ft. Meade. See below for all of the details and information on how to register:

Who? – Program is built for Cub Scouts (wolf, bear, webelos), Boy Scouts and Venturing Scouts. Invited is any young person who fits the age group of either program. Registration fits the first 365.

What?– S.T.E.M Day at Ft. Meade

Where? – MacArthur Middle School located on Fort Meade, 3500 Rockenbach Rd, Fort Meade, MD 20755.Enter through the Reece Rd. Gate Only

We will have access to the school (MacArthur Middle School) starting at 7:00 am.  You will enter through the Reece Road gate and make a right on Ernie Pyle rd.  When you get to the end of the road, the school will be on the left. Make sure that you bring an ID and registration for your car.To ensure that you can get through the gate, please provide First name, last name, middle intial, date of birth, drivers license number and state of issue for anyone attending who is 18 and older.  We must have this information by Wednesday, April 8th or you will have to go through the full vehicle sweep process.

When? – Saturday, April 23rd from 8:00 AM until 4:00 PM.

How? -  Registration now open and ends April 8th

  • YOU MUST CHOOSE A MERIT BADGE TO TAKE - DO NOT CHECK OUT WITH 2015 STEM DAY AS YOUR SELECTION
  • If you accidently check out with 2016 STEM as your selection, please go back in and edit your registration.
  • Lunch will NOT provided. Please bring a bag lunch
  • One merit badge per scout that lasts the entire day
  • Bring a blue card to class
  • Class size is limited to 25 youth per class

  • Techs Talk Nova Award (prerequisite - complete requirment 1)
    • ​Wolf - Motor Away Adventure
    • Bear - Make it Move Adventure
    • Webelos- Movie Making Adventure

Leader Training ​Informational Sessions offered:

  1. Super Nova Mentoring 10:00am-11:00am - Cafeteria (for adults)
  2. Introduction to Cyber Chip 1:30pm-2:30pm - Cafeteria (for adults)

Prerequisites:

  • General for all Merit badges - bring a completed blue card and have a current cyber chip if required for your Merit Badge
  • If no prerequisites are listed for your Merit Badge, there are none required.

Electronics:

Complete these prior to attending:

  • Draw a simple schematic diagram. It must show resistors, capacitors, and transistors or integrated circuits. Use the correct symbols. Label all parts.

  • Find out about three career opportunities in electronics that interest you. Discuss with and explain to your counselor what training and education are needed for each position

Energy:

  •  #4 Conduct an energy audit of your home. Keep a 14 day log that records what you and your family did to reduce energy use. Include the following in your report and, after the 14 day period, discuss what you have learned with your counselor.

Engineering:

  • Complete prior to event:
  • Scouts have studied merit badge book and at a minimum completed requirements 1, 2 & 9

​Game Design

  1. Have requirement 1 and 8b ready to discuss

Model Design and Building:

  •  Obtain and read the Model Design and Building merit badge pamphlet.
  •  Obtain a blue merit badge card, signed by your troop leader and present it to your Merit Badge Madness counselor.
  •  Complete Requirement 1. Be prepared to discuss it with your counselor.
  •  Complete Requirements 3, and 4. Bring completed models, plans, materials list and tools list to Merit Badge Madness. Requirement 5 will            be completed at Mb sites:

  •  Bring (if possible) Programming MB pamphlet and worksheet
  •   1a.  Cyber Chip --  although I plan to cover some of it in class
  •   5a-b-c. Projects -- this will depend on the computer lab.

Signs, Signals and codes

  1. Come prepared to discuss silent signals
  2. Complete requirement #6

Space Exploration:

  • Pre-Requisites — #2, #5a, #5b — Scouts should bring any information and materials that would be useful in completing these requirements.
  • A collector's card can be made easily with MS Word.  Make a 1-row, 2-column table with cells 2.5" x 3.5".  Put name and photo in one cell and succinct facts in the other.  It should resemble a typical baseball card.  Be creative!
  • Scouts should bring tools that would be useful for assembling a model rocket: pocketknife, scissors, tape, glue, ruler, etc.
  • Parents & Scouters who have experience with real space missions, or launching model rockets, are welcome to stay and help!

Weather:

  1.  Read the Weather merit badge book
  2.  Record the following information at the same time each day for one week:  wind direction and speed, temperature, precipitation, and types of clouds.  Be sure to make a note of any morning dew or frost.  Also list the weather forecasts from the television or radio for the same time each day and show how the weather turned out.
  3. Be prepared to give a 5 minute talk to the group about outdoor safety rules in the event of lightning, flash floods and tornadoes.  OR  Be prepared to give a 5 minute talk about acid rain after reading at least five articles about the subject.
